[강의 정리] '오늘 내로', '이번 주 중에'의 진짜 영어 표현 (within today, during this week 오류 교정)
많은 한국인 학습자들이 "오늘 내로", "이번 주 안에/중에"를 영작할 때 within today, during this week, within this week 같은 콩글리시를 자연스럽게 사용합니다.
A. 전치사의 본질 [02:10]
during, within,in,on등)는 '명사'를 문장에 연결해 주는 찍찍이/풀 역할을 합니다.
week,day,year,month,Tuesday등 시간의 단위 명사 앞에 아래 단어들이 붙으면, 그 결합 자체가 하나의 완전한 부사(Adverb)가 됩니다:this(this week,this month,this year)last(last week,last year)next(next week,next year,next month)every(every week,every year)부사의 본질 [02:04]: 부사는 전치사라는 연결고리(풀) 없이 문장에 스스로 덧붙는 요소입니다.
this week, next week앞에 전치사during이나within을 붙이는 것은 문법적으로 완전히 틀린 비문(영어에 없는 표현)입니다 (❌within this week, ❌during this week불가).
this week, next week만 단독으로 씁니다 [02:37].
within이나during같은 전치사를 결합할 수 없습니다 (❌within today, ❌during tomorrow불가).
send an email to you라고 길게 늘이지 않고email you로 표현합니다.[00:57] I will email you.
send you two emails처럼 씁니다.)
I will send you a text message대신 동사text를 사용하여I will text you로 표현합니다.
- [03:53] I will email you sometime this week.
- [03:53] I will email you sometime tomorrow.
- [04:41] I will email you sometime today.
방법 ②: 정관사 the를 활용한 정석 전치사구 (within the day) [05:46]
지금 말하고 있는 바로 그날을 가리키므로the day가 바로 '오늘 당일'을 뜻합니다. within the day[06:21]:the day는 명사이므로 전치사within의 목적어로 완벽히 성립합니다.- [06:31] I will email you within the day.
|---|---|---|
| 오늘 내로 | within today |
• today / sometime today / within the day |
| 다음 주 중으로 | during next week |
• next week / sometime next week |
| 다음 달 안에 | within next month |
• next month / sometime next month |
| 내년 안으로 | within next year |
• next year |
| 내일 중으로 | during tomorrow |
• tomorrow / sometime tomorrow |
I will visit you once during next week.
① "찾아가다 / 놀러 가다" : come visit / go visit [07:00]
- [07:41] Come visit me!
- [07:44] I will come visit you.
during을 빼고sometime next week또는next week를 뒤에 붙입니다.
- I will come visit you sometime next week.
sometime today/this week, 반드시 그때까지 완료해야 하는 기한에는by the end of today/this week, 현재부터 일정 길이 이내에는within 24 hours/within a week, 주어진 시간 구간의 사건에는during the week, 평범한 시간 지정에는today/next week를 선택한다.
1-1. within today
I'll email you within today는 관용적이지 않아 우선 피하는 것이 좋다.
I'll email you sometime today, I'll email you by the end of today, I'll email you by close of business today를 사용한다.
1-2. during this week
During this week, we held three meetings처럼 특정 주 동안 어떤 사건이 있었는지 설명할 수 있다. 다만 I'll call you during this week는 약속 잡기에는 장황하므로 I'll call you sometime this week가 훨씬 자연스럽다.
1-3. within this week와 within the week
실제 사용: within this week는 일반 미국 영어에서는 덜 관용적이고 by the end of this week가 더 명확하다. 반면 Cambridge Dictionary에는 within the week가 이번 주가 끝나기 전에라는 뜻으로 실려 있다.
실전 선택: 기한이면 by the end of the week, 수일 안이라면 within a week, 현재 주 안의 어느 때라면 sometime this week.
1-4. this week, next week, last week, every week
I have a meeting this week처럼 전치사 없이 시간을 덧붙일 수 있는 패턴이 있다. this 등 한정사가 week라는 명사를 품사상 순수 부사로 변신시키는 것은 아니다.
확장: for this week(이번 주 동안 적용되는), by next week(다음 주쯤에는), during the last week(지난주 동안)처럼 전치사와 결합하는 시간 명사구도 있다.
1-5. this month, this year, last year, next year, next month, every year
사용 포인트: 마감일이라면 by the end of next month, 오늘부터 30일 이내라면 within the next 30 days, 오늘부터 12개월 이내라면 within the next year가 정확하다. next year는 다음 달력 연도이며 within the next year는 통상 지금부터 약 1년이라는 범위를 나타낸다.
1-6. today, tomorrow, tonight
I'll email you sometime today는 시간을 일부러 열어 둔다.
1-7. during tomorrow / during next week / within next month / within next year
비교: during tomorrow는 자연스러운 일상 회화의 시간 지정으로는 매우 어색하다. tomorrow, sometime tomorrow, during tomorrow's meeting처럼 문형을 바꾸는 편이 좋다. during next week도 기본적으로 next week 또는 sometime next week가 자연스럽지만 특정 구간의 사건을 부각하는 문맥에서는 해석 가능하다.
within next month와 within next year는 관용적인 기간 표현으로는 대개 the가 빠져 어색하다. within the next month/year는 정상적인 영어이며 현시점부터 앞으로 한 달/한 해 이내를 뜻할 수 있다.
1-8. I will email you. / email you
I will email you는 목적어가 사람인 타동사 구조다.
I'll email you the details처럼 어떤 내용을 보낼지까지 붙일 수 있다. send you an email 역시 정확하고 아주 자연스럽다.
1-9. send an email to you / send you two emails
문형: send + 물건 + to + 사람 또는 send + 사람 + 물건이라는 두 패턴이 가능하다. send an email to you는 문법적으로 맞으며 다른 사람이 아닌 바로 너에게라는 to you의 대비를 강조할 때도 가능하다. 평범한 말에는 send you an email이 더 간결할 수 있다.
포인트: 수량을 셀 때 send you two emails도 가능하고 email you twice도 가능하지만 두 이메일과 두 번의 발송은 항상 일치하지 않을 수 있다.
1-10. I will send you a text message / I will text you
I'll text you the address는 주소를 문자로 보내겠다는 뜻이다.
1-11. I will email you sometime this week.
I'll send it by 5 p.m.
1-12. I will email you sometime tomorrow.
1-13. I will email you sometime today.
I'll email you by the end of today나 by 5 p.m. today가 더 신뢰성 있는 답일 수 있다.
1-14. within the day / I will email you within the day.
실전 선택: 오늘이 끝나기 전이면 by the end of today, 당일 처리·응답이면 the same day나 by the end of the day, 지금부터 24시간 안이면 within 24 hours로 명확하게 구분한다.
1-15. by this week
완료 기한을 분명히 하려면 by the end of this week 또는 by Friday를 선택한다.
1-16. until this week
I hadn't heard from her until this week는 이번 주가 되어서야 연락을 받았다는 뜻으로 자연스럽다. 이번 주 말까지 지속이라면 until the end of this week가 좋다.
1-17. 원문 기간표의 today, sometime today, within the day
‘오늘 업무시간 내’라는 뜻이면 by close of business today 또는 by 5 p.m. today를 우선한다.
다음 주 말까지 완료라는 뜻이라면 by the end of next week, 오늘부터 7일 이내라면 within seven days가 명료하다.
1-19. 원문 기간표의 next month, sometime next month
실전 비교: next month는 다음 달, sometime next month는 다음 달 중 어느 날인지는 미정이다. within the next month와 by the end of next month는 시작점과 마감일이 달라 같은 의미가 아니다.
1-20. 원문 기간표의 next year
반면 within the next year는 지금부터 대략 12개월 내라는 기간이므로 2026년 말도 포함될 수 있다. 내년 말까지의 기한은 by the end of next year다.
I will visit you once during next week.
I'll visit you sometime next week가 더 자연스럽다. I'll visit you once next week처럼 쓸 수 있다. during next week는 단순 약속에는 무겁거나 어색하다.
1-22. visit you, come visit, go visit
문형: visit + 사람/장소이므로 visit to you라고 하지 않는다. come visit, go visit은 미국 영어 구어에서 흔한 come/go + 동사원형 구조다. 더 격식을 갖추거나 다른 영어 변종에서는 come and visit, go and visit도 자연스럽다.
1-23. Come visit me!
Come and visit me sometime! 실제 방문 일정을 정하려면 this weekend, after work, when you're in town 같은 조건을 더할 수 있다.
1-24. I will come visit you. / I will come visit you sometime next week.
May I stop by sometime next week?

해설: sometime this week는 주중 미정 시각이다. get back to you는 다시 연락하다는 뜻이고 once we've compared는 비교가 끝난 뒤를 나타낸다.

This week, we've had ...
핵심 표현: outage(서비스 장애), payment system(결제 시스템), put together a timeline(시간표·사건 연표 작성).
I'll be in your neighborhood sometime next week, and if you're free, I'd love to stop by for coffee instead of just showing up without warning.
해설: sometime next week는 미정 방문 시점, if you're free는 상대의 동의를 확인하는 조건이다. stop by는 잠깐 들르다, show up without warning은 예고 없이 나타나다라는 뜻이다.
핵심 표현: neighborhood(동네), stop by(잠깐 들르다), without warning(예고 없이).
I said I'd send the file sometime today, but since you need it for your six o'clock presentation, I'll make sure it's in your inbox by four.
해설: sometime today는 불특정 시각, by four는 확실한 새 기한이다. make sure는 약속 이행을 강조하고 since는 기한을 앞당긴 이유를 설명한다.
핵심 표현: make sure(반드시 확인·보장하다), presentation(발표), in your inbox(받은 편지함에).
**A:** Do you know when you'll be able to send the updated report? The client call is at five, and I need some time to go through it first.
**B:** I was going to email it to you sometime today, but I didn't realize you needed it before the call.
**A:** Could you get it to me by three, then? That would give me enough time to check the figures and send back any questions.
**B:** Absolutely.I'll finish reviewing it after lunch and make sure it's in your inbox by three.

**A:** That works.Just text me once you know, and I'll make sure we're home instead of making other plans.
A 해석: 좋아.
**B:** Perfect.I'll text you on Friday and then come visit next week once we've picked a day that suits everyone.
대화 포인트: sometime next week는 방문의 미정 시간, by Friday는 일정을 알게 되는 기한, on Friday는 문자를 보낼 날이다.
**A:** I sent a support request late last night. Will someone get back to me today, or does it usually take longer?

대화 포인트: within 24 hours는 접수 후 흐른 시간, by tonight은 그날 밤까지라는 대략적 기한, by six this evening은 구체적 시각이다.
4-1. today vs sometime today
영어 A: I'll email you today after I finish the budget review.
영어 B: I'll email you sometime today after I finish the budget review.
4-2. sometime today vs by the end of today
영어 A: I'll call you sometime today once I've spoken to the supplier.
영어 B: I'll call you by the end of today once I've spoken to the supplier.
4-3. by the end of today vs within 24 hours
영어 A: Please upload the documents by the end of today so we can review them tomorrow morning.
영어 B: Please upload the documents within 24 hours of receiving this message so we can review them promptly.
4-4. by close of business today vs by midnight tonight
영어 A: I'll send the invoice by close of business today, before the accounting team leaves.
영어 B: I'll send the invoice by midnight tonight, even if I have to finish it after dinner.
4-5. this week vs during this week
영어 A: I'll finish the training this week and start taking calls on Monday.
영어 B: During this week, we've had several training sessions to prepare for the new system.
4-6. this week vs by the end of this week
영어 A: We plan to interview the final candidates this week, although the exact day hasn't been decided.
영어 B: We need to interview all the final candidates by the end of this week because the offer has to go out on Monday.
4-7. within a week vs by the end of this week
영어 A: We can usually repair the device within a week of receiving it, depending on the parts we need.
영어 B: We need to repair the device by the end of this week because the customer is picking it up on Saturday.
4-8. next month vs within the next month
영어 A: We're moving next month, so we've started sorting through old clothes and books.
영어 B: We have to move within the next month because our current lease expires soon.
다음 달 말까지라는 기한은 by the end of next month로 따로 말한다.
4-9. next year vs within the next year
영어 A: We're planning to launch the new course next year after we finish the pilot program.
영어 B: We're hoping to launch the new course within the next year, provided the pilot program goes well.
4-10. sometime vs sometimes vs some time
영어 A: Let's have coffee sometime next week when both of us are free.
영어 B: We sometimes get coffee after work when our schedules line up.
영어 C: It may take some time to fix the network issue, so I'll send you an update later.
4-11. email you vs send you an email
영어 A: I'll email you the updated agenda after the meeting so everyone has the same information.
영어 B: I'll send you an email with the updated agenda after the meeting so everyone has the same information.
A는 동사 email을, B는 명사 an email을 쓴다.
4-12. come visit vs visit vs stop by
영어 A: I'll come visit you next weekend after I check my work schedule.
영어 B: I'll visit you next weekend after I check my work schedule.
영어 C: I'll stop by for a little while next weekend if you're free.
this week는 I called her this week에서 시간 부사어의 기능을 하는 명사구다. this 때문에 품사가 반드시 부사로 바뀌는 것은 아니다. 따라서 for this week, during this week, by next week 같은 전치사구가 가능한지 여부를 단순 품사 논리로 금지할 수 없다.
5-2. within + 기간과 날짜
within a week는 대체로 기준점부터 일주일 이내, within 24 hours는 24시간 이내, within the week는 그 주가 끝나기 전에라는 뜻으로 쓰일 수 있다. within the day도 문법적으로 형성할 수 있지만 미국 영어의 일상적인 오늘 마감 안내에서는 by the end of today를 우선 추천한다.
by 5 p.m., by Friday, by the end of today, by the end of this week는 그때보다 늦지 않게 완료하거나 도착해 있어야 한다는 뜻이다. by this week처럼 종료 시점이 불분명한 표현은 피한다.
5-4. during과 for, while
예를 들어 during the meeting, for two hours, while we were meeting은 의미도 구조도 다르다.
5-5. sometime, some time, sometimes
sometime은 불확정 시점, some time은 일정 시간량, sometimes는 가끔이라는 빈도다. sometime today와 some time today는 문맥에 따라 겹쳐 보일 수 있지만 기본 학습에서는 sometime을 시점 표현으로 익힌다.
5-6. today, tonight, tomorrow
today는 오늘, tonight은 오늘 밤, tomorrow는 내일이라는 시간 부사어로 쉽게 쓰인다. by tonight은 밤까지라는 대략적 기한이므로 중요 업무라면 by 6 p.m. today, by midnight tonight 등으로 구체화한다.
5-7. email / text / message
수량이 필요하면 send someone two emails, send someone three texts처럼 말할 수 있다. email someone the file도 가능하므로 동사로 바꾸었다고 내용물을 생략해야 하는 것은 아니다.
5-8. send
send someone an email과 send an email to someone은 모두 맞다. send the file to me, send me the file도 자연스럽다.
5-9. visit, come visit, go visit
미국 영어에서는 come visit me, go visit my parents가 흔하고, come and visit, go and visit도 사용한다. visit to my friend가 아니라 visit my friend다. 방문 허락이 필요하면 Can I stop by?
5-10. come over / stop by / drop by
come over는 상대 집 등에 방문하다, stop by와 drop by는 잠깐 들르다라는 친근한 표현이다. I'll come over sometime next week는 구체적 방문 시각이 아직 미정이다.
5-11. end of day / close of business / EOD
by the end of today는 일반적인 오늘 끝 기한, by close of business today는 업무 마감 시각, by EOD는 업무 메일·메신저의 end of day 축약형이다.
meet the deadline(기한을 맞추다), miss the deadline(놓치다), get back to you(회신하다), keep you posted(계속 알려 주다), as soon as(~하자마자), once(~한 뒤)가 중요하다.
Cambridge Dictionary는within the week를 그 주가 끝나기 전에라는 뜻으로 제시한다. 정확한 마감이면by the end of this week를 권한다.within today는 일반적인 미국 영어 업무 문장에서는 피하는 것이 좋다. 문제는 그 표현의 관용성·의미 명료성이다.within the day가within today의 최고의 대체 표현이라는 설명은 부정확하다. 가능하더라도 미국 영어에서는by the end of today,by close of business today가 훨씬 명확하고 관용적이다.the day가 항상 오늘을 뜻하지도 않는다.sometime today는 마감 표현과 일치하지 않는다. 기한을 반드시 강조한다면by the end of today또는 구체적 시각을 쓴다.by this week는 완료 기한으로 애매하다. 일반적인 이번 주 종료 기한이면by the end of this week,by Friday가 좋다.until this week는 ‘이번 주 내내’라는 뜻으로 이해하면 안 된다.I hadn't heard from her until this week처럼 이번 주가 되어서야라는 경계를 나타낼 수 있다. 이번 주가 끝날 때까지라면until the end of this week다.within the next month/year는 정상적인 표현이다. 하지만during tomorrow's meeting처럼during이 구체적인 내일의 행사를 수식하는 명사구와 결합하면 정상이다.tomorrow를 사용한 모든 전치사구를 일반적으로 금지하지 않는다.email you와send you an email은 모두 자연스럽다.
